Case Study - Andrew Margerrison, Ghana trip

By Scott | October 28, 2009

121 Making Waves sponsored Andrew Margerrison to undertake some voluntary work in Ghana, a report from Andrew is below.

—–

Due to your generosity and help raising funds, this summer I traveled to Ghana for a 2 month teaching and community work placement.  I worked in a non-government organisation called BASICS, based in Chorkor, one of the poorest regions of the capital.

BASICS was set up to compliment and extrapolate on the limited education the children receive in state school, which are always burdened with inadequate space and overcrowding.   For the 1st week or so I shadowed a teacher there with one of the older classes, and then was put in charge in charge of the kindergarten for the rest of my time.  14 shouting, singing and smiling kids ranging from 5 to 12 years old certainly made things eventful!  The kindergarten hadn’t started full school, and so creative games, sports and music was as important as academic studies, which suited me down to the ground!

I instigated activities such as football tournaments, a ‘kindergarten Olympics’
(Which I didn’t win gold and so stropped for an afternoon), made paper-mache
masks and several painting projects, which now decorate the centre and the kids seem really proud of.

BASICS is run on a shoestring budget, and so any activities or ideas I had had to be funded by your sponsorship, for which I can’t thank you enough.  This includes arts and craft materials, costumes and even ingredients for disastrous mass pizza making.  It seems the children and I shared mutual feelings about each others food.   These kids had the biggest smiles in the world, and it was amazing to see how happy such simple things could make people who have nothing, and so again I am very grateful.
